The balance of good vs bad

Why is it that as soon as something really good happens in life it's immediately balanced against something toss? I don't mean in the sense that 2 events occur that are good and bad in equal measure but that one happens usually around the same time as the other. Take today for example: Went to work this morning fully expecting another dreadful day in my dead end keyboard monkey job, instead I had a really good day and ended the day with a new girlfriend! Then tonight, I fully expected to leave work and mosey on over to Huddersfield to see the excellent Prof. Mike Page give a lecture on the origins of Darwins theories of evolution. Instead, thanks to a combination of bad weather, shocking traffic and someone selfish enough to crash their car in Bradford city centre, I ended up missing the start of the lecture by 40 minutes and sitting in the University library waiting for my lift home.
See what I mean - Good thing happens = Bad thing happens.
I demand an explanation - and if anybody mentions karma I will not be held responsible for my actions!
